Where Does It Go?

With vague federal regulations regarding the appropriate disposal of E-Waste, the majority of these electronics will find their new homes in the nation’s overflowing landfills, amounting to about two percent of the municipal solid waste stream. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that in 2005 alone, roughly 1.5 to 1.8 million tons of E-Waste was disposed of in landfills.

Those electronics escaping landfills, often under the guise of ‘proper recycling,’ will often meet their fate in developing countries within India and China, or others within Africa. It is estimated that somewhere between fifty and eighty percent of waste collected for recycling, is actually shipped overseas for disposal.
